A happy customer asked:
"Do you have any recommendations for keep the
leather tails in good shape? Any particular oil or solution?"
Adam
replied:
"I'm not at all convinced that any one preparation
is 'better' for the leather than any other. I like Lexol
conditioner because it is easy to use (that is, not easy
to over use) and has no particular aroma.
"However, unscented mineral oil or plain petroleum
jelly, used a little at a time do a wonderful job on the
belting leather that the Flagellarium is made from, but where Lexol
can be more or less slathered on and wiped off ... mineral oil or petroleum
jelly have to be worked in by hand.
"The most important consideration is to do the
conditioning before the leather gets noticeably dry ...
and not use too much at one time. Over-oiling will add weight to the
leather, and make it into the 19th century equivalent of rubber."
